With the painting of “My Back to the World” by Agnes Martin, it makes me feel my emotions radiating off of me. Martin is able to capture the whole of her life in one simple painting, although not very simple, it is actually extremely complex and has many diversities in these six layers. There is never a moment where one color is the exact same, the texture is constantly changing and there is no consistency. I think Martin was trying to capture the essence and importance of her life by explaining to the viewers that life will always bring change, never simplicity. I would like to believe this painting directly connects to me because for my personality, I love change and excitement, and lately have been feeling like life simply is never going to change and I am stuck in this never ending cycle of doom. Martin’s painting lets me feel this certain type of reassurance and comfort that my time will come, and life will certainly bring me surprises. It makes me feel happy and excited, yet confused and scared at the same time.
